For Indie Film Lovers: Ingenious, starring Jeremy Renner, turns to Kickstarter for theatrical funding

Posted on 06 September 2012 by Joey DC

I am a huge indie film lover, so I was thrilled when I got the wonderful opportunity through my Jeremy Renner fansite to review Ingenious, which is based on a real story about two close friends who struggle to make a living until one of them has an inventive idea that changes everything.

The film stars Jeremy Renner, Dallas Roberts and Ayelet Zurer, and touched me from beginning to end. The wonderfully written script by Mike Cram offers humor, drama as well as common every day struggles that many of us are familiar with. Ingenious has got a lot of heart, because of its authentic characters and features a fantastic cast that shares a captivating chemistry throughout the film.

The critically acclaimed indie film from 2009 has been featured in fifteen festivals, and is now hoping to get their funds together via Kickstarter, so it could be finally shown nationwide. Below is the official press release that was published yesterday, September 05, 2012.

Critically acclaimed indie hit turns down offers from major distributors

INGENIOUS, an independent movie filmed in 35mm in Tucson, has turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for its theatrical release.

Starring two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (The Bourne Legacy) and Dallas Roberts (The Grey), INGENIOUS has been in limbo for two years, waiting for finishing funds, and to take advantage of Renner's increasing popularity.

During that time, INGENIOUS, although shown essentially as a rough cut, became a festival hit. Featured in fifteen festivals, it was the Opening Night film at the Jerusalem and Cleveland Film Festivals and the Closing Night film at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. INGENIOUS also won Best Picture and Best Director awards.

Reviews from the festivals have been overwhelmingly positive:

"A terrific yarn, a uniquely American movie. Renner and Roberts are sublimely cast. Could become an indie success story." Lael Lowenstein – VARIETY

"Great Script and inspired performances." Kim Voynar – MUSIC CITY NEWS

"We have received a number of offers from major US distributors," said Brian Neufang with Arriba Films, "but didn't think they shared our enthusiasm for a wide release, which we feel this movie merits."

INGENIOUS is based on a true story about a small-time inventor (Roberts) and a slick salesman (Renner) who hit rock bottom before coming up with a product that becomes a worldwide phenomenon.

"But the movie isn't about the product," Neufang said. "It's about perseverance and overcoming hard times with humor. We're determined to prove," Neufang went on to say, "that good indie films can succeed outside the Hollywood system."

The INGENIOUS Kickstarter page, including the trailer and synopsis can be viewed at kickstarter.com/projects/529142360/ingenious-us-theatrical-release

The Ingenious Team offers some really awesome rewards to those who pledge their support on Kickstarter, so check it out and spread the word if you find it interesting.

The Bourne Legacy Review – Less would have been more

Posted on 14 August 2012 by Joey DC

The Bourne Legacy is the fourth installment in the successful Bourne franchise, introducing the new character Aaron Cross, a medically enhanced super agent whose days seem to be numbered when the Outcome program he's part of gets terminated.

The idea of moving forward without the original character Jason Bourne, played by Matt Damon, has many loyal Bourne fans upset and confused. How can you make another Bourne movie without the essential character in it? Well, you can by cleverly presenting other programs aside from Treadstone and Blackbriar, which provide the opportunity of bringing a completely new character to life. After all, Jason Bourne is not the only trained assassin there is.

Aaron Cross, played by Jeremy Renner, is nothing short of intriguing if only the script focused more on him as an individual. There were way too many cooks in one kitchen meaning a lot of different characters shown throughout the film. The main figure still seemed to be Jason Bourne, who was mentioned and showed on various pictures, while Aaron Cross was pushed to the background. Especially the beginning of the film was packed with an insane amount of information, involving the happenings of The Bourne Ultimatum, so whoever hadn't seen it would understand the connection between the previous one and The Bourne Legacy, which events take place at the same time. The first half-hour of the film felt more tiring than entertaining because of all the drawn out scenes, taking away valuable screen time from the new main character Aaron Cross, who should have been front and center from the get-go.

Jeremy Renner made The Bourne Legacy attractive and watchable, doing a phenomenal job of portraying the rogue agent, whose name used to be Kenneth James Kitson before he gave himself to the Outcome program. By performing most of the stunts, even the motorcyle ones, himself, he added an incredible authenticity to his character and convinced on every level. Unfortunately, there was not enough room for proper character development, so it was very hard to get a better understanding of Aaron Cross and where he came from.

The flashback scenes were not distinctive enough to differ from the then and now. The only indication for a flashback moment was Aaron Cross' physical appearance, which changed from beard to no beard and bruises to no bruises on his face. However, despite the disappointing script, the few action sequences including the thrilling motorcycle chase were absolutely fantastic. You got rewarded with some breathtaking camera shots that highlighted these fast-paced instances such as Aaron Cross sliding down a small gap in between of two walls, and the superbly done motorcycle act on the busy streets of Manila, Philippines. The crew did also a wonderful job scouting the right filming locations, which took you on a journey around the world just like the original three films already did.

Despite the squeezed amount of content into one film, the casting deserved an A+. The chemistry between all of the actors particularly Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz undoubtedly fueled the film. Weisz's portrayal of Dr. Marta Shearing was both believable and enjoyable, and so was Edward Norton's role as retired USAF Colonel Eric Byer, whose ruthlessness for the "greater good" added some much needed spice.

Even though clearly credited on the film poster alongside the starring actors, original cast member Joan Allen aka CIA Department Director Pam Landy appeared only for a split second in The Bourne Legacy, which turned out to be the biggest disappointment altogether. She had been a vital character in the last two Bourne films, chasing after Jason Bourne, and to see her role reduced to merely a few seconds of screen time felt like an insult to viewers who anticipated her reappearance.

The bottom line is that all The Bourne Legacy trailers already feature the best parts of the movie, and sadly enough there's not much else to look forward to. The story line is climax free and focuses more on past events and Jason Bourne than the exploration of the newly introduced character Aaron Cross. Nonetheless, don't let this keep you from watching The Bourne Legacy, because if you are an admirer of Renner, Weisz or Norton then you are definitely in for a treat.

The Bourne Legacy – First Trailer and Poster

Posted on 08 February 2012 by Joey DC

The first teaser trailer and poster for Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy have found its way online. The fourth movie in the Bourne franchise is starring Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, an outcome agent who used to be known as Kenneth Kitson before he committed to "the program." Although there is not much revealed about the plot, the new bad-ass character is described as “Treadstone without the inconsistency.” Also worth mentioning is the clear announcement that "Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg." Excited yet? I certainly am and the trailer exceeds all my expectations by far.

Other cast includes Bourne newcomers Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz as well as the return of Joan Allen and Albert Finney. The Bourne Legacy is set to be released on August 03, 2012 and I personally can't wait to see it. Jeremy Renner really rocks this trailer!

Jeremy Renner to star and produce in race biopic Slingshot

Posted on 14 June 2011 by Joey DC

If you thought that Jeremy Renner has already enough on his plate with The Avengers still filming and The Bourne Legacy and Better Living Through Chemistry in pre-production, then you couldn’t have been more wrong. In fact, it almost seems as the actor has decided to give up on sleep altogether and rather commits to yet another project titled Slingshot which has him attached to star and produce.

Paramount gave the green light for this movie project which will tell the true-life story of underdog Bill Caswell, a do-it-yourself racer who became known when he bought a 991 BMW 318i on Craigslist for $500 and rebuilt it just to enter racing rallies right after. His first race lasted only five minutes as he crashed the car and blew the engine. Ultimately, the once unemployed racing fanatic landed on the winning track, coming in third place at the World Rally Championships in Mexico and outracing teams with cars worth $400,000.

Slingshot will be produced by Jeremy Renner and his ‘actor-turned-filmmaker’ business partner Don Handfield, who pens the screenplay.

This marks the second project for Renner’s production company “The Combine” which he manages together with Handfield. The Combine’s first project is a Steve McQueen biopic which is already in development.

Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner are Low Life

Posted on 01 June 2011 by Joey DC

According to Deadline, director/writer James Gray is working on a new project titled Low Life and Jeremy Renner is in negotiations to join Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix as third lead.

The story is about a woman (Cotillard) who attempts to immigrate from Poland. While sailing to Ellis Island, her sister grows deathly ill and she is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to keep her sister alive. Once they land, she is warned to keep quiet about what happened. Though she does, she walks away with immigration papers that deem her a woman with bad morals. With no place to go, she falls prey to a charming sleazebag (Phoenix), who persuades her to turn tricks in New York. Renner’s character would play Phoenix’s cousin, a magician who charms the young woman and is her best chance to escape the life she has fallen into.

Filming is scheduled to begin next year.
