The Five Year Engagement Sneak Peak In Ann Arbor

April 25, 2012

I was lucky enough to attend a sneak peek of the new film The Five Year Engagement, followed by a Q&A with writer/director Nick Stoller and producer Rodney Rothman this past Friday in Ann Arbor, where the film was primarily shot.

The film stars Jason Segel (who co-wrote the script with Stoller) and Emily Blunt and is about the struggles the couple faces on their way to the altar.

Throughout their Q&A, Stoller and Rothman emphasized how this movie is something of a love letter to the city of Ann Arbor, as both have married women with ties to University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and have grown to love it very much.

Stoller and Segel’s last collaboration resulted in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and I can honestly say that they’ve done it again in The Five Year Engagement. Besides an affinity for long movie titles, the two share a unique sense of humor that makes for great collaborations and hilarious films.

My review is forthcoming, but in the meantime, I can definitely say that I highly recommend The Five Year Engagement, which will be released on April 27th.

Other highlights from the Q&A

  •     They really loved shooting in Ann Arbor. They emphasized again how much they love the town throughout the course of the Q&A
  •     Ended up cutting Jason Segel’s full frontal scene, they decided two shots of his but were enough.    *
  •     One audience member said the film had a real old school Woody Allen vibe, which Stoller appreciated, said that Annie Hall was definitely an inspiration along with other films that charted relationships over the course of several years.
  •     Joining Stoller and Rothman for the Q&A was the owner of Zingerman’s, an Ann Arbor establishment. Zingerman’s is heavily featured throughout the course of the movie, although Stoller joked that the crew never received any free food from them.
