“The Hunger Games” Poster

January 23, 2012

My most anticipated movie for 2012 is, without question, The Hunger Games. Here are just a couple reasons why:

1) Jennifer Lawrence. Jennifer Lawrence. Jennifer Lawrence.

Film buffs will recognize her from such breakout roles in Winter’s Bone and Like Crazy, both of which won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance in back to back years. She even scored an Oscar nomination for Winter’s Bone at the ripe old age of 20. She is easily one of the most talented actresses of her generation, and with this as her breakout role, she is going to be a huge star. Watch out Hollywood, Ms. Lawrence has arrived.

2) The trailer seen ‘round the world.

Did you guys see that trailer? I mean, seriously… I was balling my eyes out in a corner of the library at school when I saw it for the first time. Since then, I’ve downloaded it on iTunes and have watched it countless times and I still cry every time Katniss volunteers as tribute. The trailer went viral, with over 270,000 hits on YouTube.

3) “Safe and Sound”

Everyone knows Taylor Swift for her brand of country pop. When she announced that she had collaborated with the indie duo The Civil Wars for the first single off of the soundtrack, was anyone expecting this haunting lullaby? The song is available for download on iTunes, or follow the link to see the song performed live at a recent concert in Nashville. If this is a taste of what is to come on the soundtrack, I can’t wait to hear the rest.

4) The Official Scavenger Hunt

If you happened to have been trolling the internet sometime between 1 and 4 in the afternoon on December 15th, you would have noticed several blogs posting puzzle pieces. To celebrate one hundred days until the film’s release, Lionsgate broke the poster down into a one hundred piece puzzle, which they scattered all over the internet. After a mad scramble, the puzzle was solved and the official image was released. As far as I am aware, this is the first time a film’s marketing team capitalized on a pre-existing rabid fan base, and the result was sensational. Oh yea, and the poster was pretty cool too.

5) The supporting cast.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth are fantastic. I was thrilled that these three young, talented, semi-under the radar actors were cast in the lead roles. We can expect great things to come from these actors (AWOL, anyone?). Even more impressive are the supporting players. Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Lenny Kravitz and Stanley Tucci (among others) are a high-powered cast for any movie, let alone a franchise based on young adult novels. It really speaks to the strength of the material that these people would agree to take part.

In short, if you haven’t read the books yet—What are you waiting for? The movie comes out in two months (March 23 is already highlighted on my calendar) and it’s going to be sensational. In the meantime, check out the final poster, which was released last week. Maybe now we’ll get another trailer… Or some TV spots… Or some clips!
