So, Meryl Did Deserve that Golden Globe

I made it to the theater to watch “The Iron Lady” the day after the Golden Globes.  I went in with high expectations after Meryl Streep’s Golden Globe win.  Meryl did not disappoint.  “The Iron Lady” is the story of Margaret Thatcher, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and how that role changed her life.  The movie focuses on Thatcher’s later years as she copes with the loss of her husband Denis, played by Jim Broadbent.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the movie beautifully interweaves Thatcher’s current life with snippets from her younger years.  Those snippets show us how hard Thatcher had to work to be heard, the impact her decisions made and the tragedies she faced while holding office.

This movie won’t be for everyone.  It’s very strong on history and feels slow at times, but nonetheless, I would expect Meryl Streep to be a strong contender for an Academy Award this February.  You forget that you're watching a fabulous actress and simply get lost in Margaret Thatcher’s story.  Overall, I give this movie 4 stars because of the overwhelmingly terrific performance by Meryl Streep.

“The Iron Lady” is rated PG-13 and runs for 105 minutes.

All movies are reviewed on the following scale

1 Star – I asked for my money back

2 Stars – Not the worst thing I’ve seen, but pretty darn close

3 Stars – It was OK

4 Stars – It was really good

5 Stars – I’d pay to see it again
