Oscar Nominations – Snap Judgements

January 26, 2012

So maybe “snap” isn’t the right word, as nominations have been out for two days now, but I’ve finally had a chance to mull over the Academy Awards nominations. Here is what I’m excited about:

– Melissa McCarthy’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Bridesmaids.

Did anyone see her speech when she won the Emmy this past fall? I’ll admit it, I choked up a bit while watching her acceptance speech. Seeing Ms. McCarthy get this recognition made me tear up all over again, I am absolutely thrilled that this has become the year of Melissa McCarthy.

Bridesmaids for Best Original Screenplay

While I do wish that Bridesmaids had made the cut for Best Picture, I’m still glad that the writers got their due. Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig created a fantastically funny script about female friendship. This talented duo is a force to be reckoned with, and I can guarantee that this won’t be their last nomination.

– Rooney Mara for Best Actress in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I’ll admit, I was convinced that Mara would get snubbed and that I would instead be writing an article about why she should have been nominated. So glad I get to include her in this one instead! Her take on Lisbeth Salander was true to the character and yet wholly her own. She had big shoes to fill, as any fan of Noomi Rapace, the original Lisbeth Salander, would tell you, and she did so with flying colors.

– Bret Mckenzie’s Nomination for Best Original Song

In case you missed it (which you might have as its not one of the major categories) but Bret from Flight of the Conchords, the Rhymnocerous himself got nominated for an Oscar for the song “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets. Great news, or greatest news? You decide.
