Thor Will Not Be Filming in Del Mar, California

April 27, 2010

Speculation was that Del Mar would serve as the filming location for the movie Thor, which previously filmed in Los Angeles and Sante Fe, New Mexico.

According to the Del Mar Times that has changed.

The prospect of filming parts of the new “Thor” movie in Del Mar will have to remain just a cool idea. Paramount Pictures sent a letter informing the city that it has instead chosen an undisclosed Northern California location to film a beachfront scene for the 2011 flick.

Head Lifeguard Patrick Vergne said the letter cited cost concerns with moving production too far away from its headquarters.

The Del Mar City Council voted unanimously on Feb. 8 to enter into negotiations with Paramount for a filming permit, the first of its magnitude for the city.

“There were no negotiations at all,” Vergne said. “We tried to call them several times to get an update, and then we received a letter that they selected a different site.”

The scene would have involved six horses galloping down a 300-yard stretch of Del Mar’s beach. A staff report said the city’s coastline is ideal for this type of shot because its gradual slope to the waterline creates excellent reflection opportunities.

“Thor” will star Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson and Renee Russo. Chris Hemsworth, who played Capt. Kirk in the recent “Star Trek” film, will play the role of Thor.
