James Franco Cast in Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours”

January 07, 2010

francoLook, I don’t get the whole GENERAL HOSPITAL thing… but that unorthodox career choice notwithstanding, I’d call myself a fan of James Franco. He had a double-whammy of excellent work in 2008 playing drug dealer Saul Silver alongside Seth Rogen in PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, in what I think is one of the most underrated performances of that year – and followed it up with a heartfelt turn playing Sean Penn’s lover in the Best Picture nominated MILK. Add this in with his solid work as Harry Osbourne in Sam Raimi’s juggernaut SPIDER-MAN franchise, and his early efforts on the short-lived television series FREAKS & GEEKS, Franco can boast a pretty impressive IMDB page.

Variety reports that he has just been cast as leading man in director Danny Boyle’s follow up to the hugely successful SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, 127 HOURS.

In the film, which is based on a true story, Franco will play Aron Ralston, a mountain climber who finds himself trapped with his arm pinned under a boulder for five days. Ralston would eventually free himself by amputating his own limb with a knife, and hiking his way to safety after scaling down a 65-foot ledge.

This sounds to be an ambitious project, and I’m very curious about how Boyle and SLUMDOG screenwriter Simon Beaufoy intend on tackling it. One can presume that Franco is going to be the only actor on screen for the majority of the film, which is certainly quite the undertaking. Still, I’m entirely confident in both his and Boyle’s ability to deliver a quality flick.

127 HOURS will begin shooting in Utah in March, and will be released in late 2010.
